These filters work on the principle of distillation. In plain words, the water to be purified is stored in a container and heated. The water evaporates and the vapors are collected and cooled down in a separate container.

This process is able to remove contaminants like bacteria and heavy metals which cannot vaporize at the boiling point of water. The drawback is ' chemicals like chlorine also vaporize along with the water and are still present in the purified water.

They also block the natural minerals like calcium and magnesium present in the water and produce de-mineralized water, which is bad for your health.

These systems are pretty expensive too and can easily cost upwards of $400 for a good purifier.

Reverse Osmosis
These systems are really popular these days. They work by forcing the water to pass through a semi-permeable membrane with pores just big enough to allow water molecules to pass through. Anything bigger than that is blocked and left behind.

However, as bacteria and other microbes like protozoa are very small in size, they easily pass through this membrane. Even chemicals like pesticides and prescription drugs have very small molecules and are able to pass through the membrane undetected.

Another big problem with these systems is of de-mineralization. Like distillers, they also remove the essential minerals like Calcium and Magnesium from the water which can then cause mineral deficiency in our body.

Hybrid Systems
These cutting edge tap water filtration systems employ multiple techniques of ion exchange, carbon filtration, and sub micron filtration.

Together, they can remove not only the dirt, but also the organic contaminants like bacteria, heavy metals, and pesticides from the water. And all this without removing the minerals from the water too.
