Zoological Gardens, the Largest and Oldest in Yangon
The Yangon Zoological Gardens can be traced back to its operations in 1882, which started in collaboration with the Phayre's Museum. The Phayre's Museum was located at the modern site of the Yangon General Hospital. The Yangon Zoological Gardens started with a collection of animals and is now at present the oldest zoological gardens in Myanmar. Nonetheless building operations at the site was started in 1901. The public donated about 240, 000 kyats to the Yangon Zoological Gardens before it started its operations. The site, still the current site, is located in close proximity to the Royal Lake also called the Kandawgyi Lake.
Major attractions at the site include the Museum of Natural History, the Animal Performance Shows, The Aquarium and the many Fauna and Flora found at the Yangon Zoological Gardens. The Aquarium in the Yangon Zoological Gardens is the first massive sized aquarium to be opened in Myanmar; the Aquarium was opened in 1998. The Yangon Zoological Gardens has land animals that account for about 145 species, of these there are 8 endangered species. The endangered species include the eld's deer, the marsh crocodile, the great hornbill, the Burmese large tortoise, the clouded leopard, the Asian elephant, the takin and the tiger. Total number of animals stand at 1203 as of the year 2000. In the same year the Yangon Zoological Gardens comprised of 15, 000 flora from 300 species.
